Organic products: what they are and why to eat them
By organic food we mean a food that is minimally treated and does not contain artificial ingredients or preservatives, nor has it been subjected to ionizing radiation.
They can also be defined, more broadly as:
“Food obtained from agriculture or breeding based on respect for the environment, animal welfare and maintaining or increasing soil productivity”.
Therefore, this term does not only refer to a type of product but is defined mostly as a way of life. In short, it is a lifestyle choice based on a way of eating that is different from industry standards and where food production and management (cultivated or reared) takes place in an ecological way.
Benefits of organic products
In the production of organic products, no fertilizers, chemical pesticides or transgenic seeds are used. However, it is not possible to exclude the total absence of contamination, since harmful substances can sometimes be directly in the ground, in irrigation water or even fall together with rain.
They maintain the original nutritional and taste qualities, are balanced foods, rich in nutrients and must comply with strict quality controls to protect the consumer.
They promote animal and plant biodiversity and maintain the habitat of animals and local wild flora.
In organic farming, the land is fertilized and the problem of desertification is stopped thanks to the abandonment of monocultures. Furthermore, producing organic products does not pollute groundwater as no pesticides or other chemical materials are used.
Although further studies are underway, it has been shown that many biological products (above all fruit and vegetables) have a higher content of vitamins and minerals, compared to conventional ones, due to their lower water content.
Although they are not real “nutrients”, these foods contain a greater amount of enzymes, antioxidants and biologically active substances (such as polyphenols, flavonoids, etc.).
Disadvantages of organic products
They are more difficult to find
You can find products of this type in alternative grocery stores, consumer cooperatives and some sections of large commercial areas. But organic products are usually not available in more traditional stores.
They look worse
Most organic or organic products have better organoleptic properties than traditional ones, but the fact of being grown or produced without chemical preservatives makes them “uglier” than other products. The appearance and size, which are more natural but do not correspond to the image artificially created by advertising, can alienate potential consumers.
Organic products cost more
An element to take into consideration is the price of organic products, compared to traditional ones, which is the real brake for the development of the sector. You have probably already noticed that foods like milk or others double or triple their price, whether produced from farms or 100% organic farms.
One reason is the need to look for alternatives to fertilizers and pesticides, which means more machinery and labor.
Moreover, being little-known products, there is low demand, which leads to low production, increasing distribution and transportation costs.
Are organic products healthier?

Nevertheless, further studies on the subject are needed to state this with scientific certainty. We can certainly say that preferring the consumption of organic products, mainly, is the best way to reduce the environmental impact, to ensure respect and greater care of animals and land, as well as the development of local economic realities.
